Pace University researchers have found that the keystroke biometric is an inexpensive and effective method for user identification and authentication.
The Pace Keystroke Biometric System (PKBS) can be used to identify and authenticate users by their typing patterns and rhythms. PKBS consists of the Keystroke Entry system, which collects the data, the Keystroke Feature Extractor, which extracts a feature vector from the data, and the Keystroke Pattern Classifier, which is used in the authentication process. "While the main concern is currently surrounding academic integrity during online testing, this sort of authentication could be used for the same reasons when training and orientation examinations are administered in a business setting," the researchers say.
They also found that stylometry biometrics, such as the frequency of capitalization, can be a useful augmentation for determining the identities of online test takers. The research can be applied to combat problems with cheating during online testing, according to the researchers.
