The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is using its Binary Executable Transforms (BET) program to developed revolutionary technologies for analyzing, identifying, and slicing binary executable components.

DARPA wants the BET program to develop new binary executables because the application source code is no longer accessible, which means the applications are running on insecure and out-dated systems. BET aims to create new research, publications, and prototype codes that will lead to future programs.

The BET program was designed to perform research that will help the Department of Defense build transitionable technology, according to DARPA. "Approaches should be capable of processing either [portable executable] or [executable and linkable format] formats without artifacts or information dependencies particular to a specific binary format," according to a DARPA statement.
