Initiatives are underway to train African computer scientists in artificial intelligence (AI), with major technology companies investing in the cultivation of new AI specialists.
Google has opened its first African AI research facility in Ghana, to create technology applicable to healthcare, agriculture, and education.
Facility director Moustapha Cisse said the AI sector is missing out on African talent that lacks access to quality education, and he stressed that African governments should prioritize AI and back efforts to use the technology for human benefit.
Cisse cited automated disease diagnosis as an AI-derived advantage for Africans, as well as better international communication via AI-driven translation.
The Rwanda-based African Institute for Mathematical Scientists, meanwhile, is overseeing a master's degree program in association with Facebook and Google to foster next-generation technology leaders, a key step for establishing a strong African information technology industry to advance AI.
