Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) researchers have developed an autonomous robot, ALAN, that can make decisions and complete tasks based on its observations of its environment.
The researchers programmed ALAN to recognize its environment, then to move or manipulate tasks within that environment.
CMU's Russell Mendonca said, "We have been interested in building an [artificial intelligence] that learns by setting its own objectives. By not depending on humans for supervision or guidance, such agents can keep learning in new scenarios, driven by their own curiosity. This would enable continual generalization to different domains and discovery of increasingly complex behavior."
