An artificial intelligence (AI) tool developed by researchers at Switzerland's ETH Zurich can predict metamaterials to create safer bicycle helmets and better shoe soles.

The researchers focused on large (non-linear) loads, such as when a helmet absorbs the forces of an impact.

Using "variational autoencoders," the AI learns a structure's essential features from a large set of design parameters, and how they can produce specific properties.

The tool then generates a metamaterial blueprint based on the specified properties and requirements.
