The reach of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare has expanded to touch everything from cancer care to appointment no-shows. But as AI algorithms transition from exciting proofs-of-concept to a routine part of care, regulators, researchers, and hospital leaders must determine how to keep the technology in check to prevent bias.
"There are gaps in our datasets that don't adequately represent our population at large," said Maia Hightower, chief medical information officer at University of Utah Health, at the 2021 STAT Summit.
